USA Today and the Arizona Republic are reporting that company insiders to US Airways, based in Tempe, will start charging more passenger-related fees in what the airline says is charging $650 per passenger just to break even.
One of those fees? The Republic writes, "On the fee front, company insiders say the airline, the first to charge for meals several years ago, is likely to be the first major airline to charge for soft drinks. It is also expected to follow American Airlines' lead on charging for even one checked bag." In addition, the airline is reported to be purusing a la carte pricing quite aggressively.
Okay, Mr. Parker and all presidents of all US airlines: just raise the price of your ticket. We know that fuel prices are through the roof, and that is why you are changing your fare structure. But rather than go a la carte and charge us for food, drink, pillows, blankets, headsets, and checked luggage, just raise the price of your ticket and promote the fact that you are going to rise above the rest and become a full-service airline. It is basic economics: if the price of your supplies goes up, then it is unsustainable to keep charging the same price for tickets.
If rail transit came through Phoenix, I would be on it in a heartbeat.
